I am keeping busy staying creative working on the potter's wheel. There is something unbelievably relaxing about sitting down with a ball of clay and turning it into something functional. The sense of touch plays significant role in making pottery, not just a visual skill. You need to be able to feel the path the clay wants to go and be in control of it. By focusing and being in tune with your senses, you can create an awesome piece of art.
I was never formally trained to work on the wheel. In college, I opted for hand building ceramics. I thought it was awesome to be able to manipulate a piece of clay in a variety of forms with control and precision. Honestly, the wheel scared me to an extent. I knew it was difficult, and I had an overwhelming fear of failure.
As my love of clay grew, so did my curiosity and interest in trying new things. I decided to apply for a credit card so that I could buy my very first wheel. I watched my wheel-throwing classmates intently and looked up a few YouTube videos. I practiced, practiced, and practiced some more. I had a lot of thick walls, uneven sides, and a multitude of collapses along the way. However, as I continued to practice, these occurrences became few and far between. The best way to learn new things is to try it, figure out what you did wrong, change it as you go along, and be proud of what you can accomplish!
Stay creative!
